About Me

Brought up in the vibrant city of Hong Kong by tech savvy parents, the love for technology was planted into me at a very young age. As a teenager I was particularly drawn towards media design and audio/visual production - basically merging tech with artsy-fartsy-music stuff. But as an Information Management & Technology major at Syracuse University, I've been able to branch out into more technical fields in programming, project management, business analytics, network and security management, as well as systems and database administration.

While technology has and will always remain a passion of mine, flying is ultimately my first love. Spending my university semester breaks in Toronto, where I have family, opened up the opportunity for me to take up flying lessons. After gaining my Private Pilot's License, I came to the UK to complete the rest of my commercial qualifications. The dream was to kickstart my career back in Hong Kong, but as things would work out I got my start in commercial aviation with Flybe in 2018 based up in Glasgow. I've since moved on to British Airways where I'm currently a First Officer flying the Airbus A320 out of London-Gatwick.

When I'm not flying planes or nerding out over tech, you'd likely find me jamming on the drums and guitar - I like to think I have a wide ranging taste in music, even though I never quite outgrew my pop-punk phase. Not that I'm particularly good at it, but I do like to cook quite a bit. Being a guy naturally makes me a huge sports geek - I'm a Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins fan... yes, I'm well aware I essentially root for America's most hated teams. I also follow the Formula One calendar rather religiously. The constant commuting into Southampton flying overhead St. Mary's Stadium on a near daily basis when I was at Flybe has turned me into a Saints supporter. Most importantly being a Syracuse alumn naturally means I bleed Orange... LETS GO CUSE!!!

Places I've worked at
British Airways
British Airways
First Officer
June 2022 to Present
March to August 2020
  • Joining British Airways as a Direct Entry Pilot just as the COVID pandemic kicked off, I was halfway through my type rating conversion course when I was unfortunately made redundant.
  • After a 21-month hiatus, I was brought back into the fold as a First Officer on the Airbus A320 EuroFlyer operation at London-Gatwick.
Flybe
Flybe
First Officer
September 2018 to February 2020
  • Flybe was the largest independent European regional airline, providing more than half of the United Kingdom's domestic flights outside London.
  • I joined Flybe as a First Officer on the Bombardier Dash-8 Q400 fleet based out of Glasgow Airport.
  • The Q400 didn't quite feature the amount of advanced automation common amongst modern airliners, it offered little margin for error, and could at times become a rather unforgiving aircraft to fly. But it handled gracefully with a careful hand and an anticipating mind. The hands on experience gave me a fantastic platform to refine my flying skills and non-technical competencies.
  • Logging just shy of 1000 hours on type, I had begun the process of upgrading to Senior First Officer just before I left Flybe.
SIDEARM Sports
SIDEARM Sports
Technology Intern
January 2013 to December 2014
Syracuse, New York
  • SIDEARM Sports provides the software and technology that powers websites, live stats, and video streaming for collegiate and high school athletic programs across North America.
  • One of my professors in university who taught a course in web development in university was the Chief Operating Officer of SIDEARM. Taking a liking to me, he brought me into SIDEARM as a summer intern, and I was assigned to the development team where I worked with integrating designs into actual websites.
  • The summer internship progressed into a part-time position with increasing responsibilities. It gave me more exposure to other areas of the SIDEARM business, as I got to work closely with the company's project managers, designers, support staff, as well as other developers on the team to perform web maintenance for existing clients.
Where I learnt to do the things I do
FTA Global
FTA Global
Integrated ATPL Course
January 2016 to July 2017
Shoreham, West Sussex
  • Coming to FTA having already attained my Private Pilot's License from Canada, I jumped straight into the hour building portion of the integrated course before progressing to the ground school phase of training.
  • Passing all 14 ATPL Theory Exams with an 89% average, I came back onto the flight line and finished up my Multi-Engine Commercial Pilot's License and Instrument Rating.
  • Flying Garmin G1000 Diamond DA40s and DA42s out of Shoreham Airport right under the busy London airspace gave me great exposure to develop my technical competencies, and it served as a great stepping stone to prepare for airline assessments and type rating training once I'd qualified.
Syracuse University
Syracuse University
School of Information Studies
M.S. Information Management
B.S. Information Management & Technology
Syracuse, New York
  • Outside of my first semester at Syracuse, I maintained Dean's List academic standing throughout my undergraduate studies, ultimately graduating a year early from a four-year degree with the Class of 2014.
  • As a result of my firm academic standing, I became a peer advisor my senior year. I was assigned a group of first year students, meeting with them regularly to help them adapt to university life. I also led campus tours for prospective students and their families, serving as an ambassador for the university.
  • I was invited by two professors to be their teaching assistant. In addition to helping out in class as well as the grading of course work, I held office hours to support students with their assignments and projects.
  • Applying to the graduate program on a whim, I was unexpectedly accepted. After much discussion with my parents, I decided that my priority upon completing my undergraduate studies was to start pursuing my career goal of becoming a pilot. A compromise was reached where I'd complete my first semester of my graduate studies on campus, whilst continuing my internship at SIDEARM Sports. After which I completed the rest of degree via distance learning, as I took on my flight training on a full-time basis. I graduated with the Class of 2018.
